CarbonQuest is using innovative technology to cost effectively decarbonize the hard to electrify built environment
Seattle, WA, August 8, 2024 -
CarbonQuest, one of three winners of Decarbon8-US’s 2023 round, captures CO2 before it is emitted from natural gas sources like CHP systems, fuel cells, and industrial boilers, enabling immediate and effective decarbonization. Decarbonizing the built environment using traditional methods, such as electrification, can be costly and intrusive, while CarbonQuest's innovative "Distributed Carbon Capture" technology offers an economically viable solution. This patent-pending system attaches to natural gas emissions systems in buildings, capturing and converting CO2 into liquid, contributing to a local circular carbon economy through the sale of SustainableCO2 products.
"Participating in the Decarbon8 program enabled us to engage with a vibrant climate technology community,” says Shane Johnson, President and CEO of CarbonQuest. “CarbonQuest competed against some of the best and brightest entrepreneurs to receive one of the coveted Decarbon8-US awards for the 2023 season.”
Since receiving funding in September of 2023, CarbonQuest has expanded business opportunities to focus on broader distributed applications, including hard to abate industrial and
distributed low carbon power, to help address the growing power capacity challenges of the grid.
They have released an updated product design that lowers the process energy intensity by about 20% with a roadmap of innovations that will deliver the lowest levelized cost of carbon reductions in the industry.
“The Decarbon8 community helped us improve our messaging and complete our bridge financing. This allowed us to further invest in the improvement of our technology, and we were able to leverage the E8 network to connect us with commercial opportunities,” explains Johnson. “We highly recommend fellow climate entrepreneurs to apply to this fantastic program seeking to further advance decarbonization solutions."
Decarbon8-US is now accepting donations and grants for the 2024 round, focused on renewable energy. Anyone, at any amount, can make a charitable donation to Decarbon8-US to invest in technologies that will accelerate our transition to a cleaner world. All donations to Decarbon8-US are tax-deductible and are made to our 501(c)(3) partner Realize Impact, who administers the Fund. Entrepreneurs can sign up for our newsletter to be notified when our 2025 request for proposal is released.
About Decarbon8-US
Decarbon8-US is E8’s philanthropic impact fund. It uses donations and grants to invest in early stage companies whose technologies accelerate the transition to environmentally sustainable solutions. Entrepreneurs apply in the spring and a team of investors, fellows, and expert judges choose 2-3 companies to receive funding in the fall. Each year the Decarbon8-US Fund choses a different theme around decarbonization. This year, the theme is renewable energy. In 2023 the theme was the built environment.
